Umudugudu

UMUDUGUDU is Rwandan for Neighbourhood/Subdivision

At the beginning of 2012 PREFER began construction of a 10 home subdivision on land that had been purchased by the government for this specific purpose.  The local Government is assisting PREFER in choosing the recipients of the homes, ensuring each family has school age or younger children, and that the family is making efforts to improve their lifestyle, most are single parent families.    The homes are made of mud brick and when dry are covered in cement.  They have 3 bedrooms and a living room all with cement walls and floors. A toilet has also been built for each family with a cement floor.

Each family contributes their labour during construction, as does the entire community.  We have held “Umuganda” where 150 local neighbours came out to spend a morning helping at the building site.   The difference to the family is huge.  They have come from a shack made of bamboo and mud or even old corrugated metal roofing that is rusted and full of holes, the floor is dirt, the ceiling looks like Swiss cheese.  When it rains the entire contents of the shack are wet, including the family.  The children come to school cold and tired.    Their toilet is a hole in the ground surrounded by eucalyptus branches.  (The first funeral Cathy went to in Rwanda was for a 2 year old baby that had fallen thru the logs in a drop toilet; she learned quickly how to make a safe toilet.)

The family moves into their new home and life becomes drier, cleaner, safer, and healthier.  They all get a good night’s sleep allowing them to function well during the day.   They can easily wash, cook and clean in their new surroundings and they are located in a subdivision where their neighbour is near and a feeling of community is being established.
As of January 2014 the 10th house is nearing completion and the construction of an additional 2 houses will soon begin.

Umuganda happens once a month in Rwanda where everyone helps with a neighbourhood project during a Saturday morning....sometimes it's picking rocks from the school yard or maybe your helping a neighbour with the building of their new home.
The goal for 2017 is to bring solar power to the subdivision.
